Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Dual Diagnosis Treatment for Christians

At our faith based treatment center we offer a comprehensive Christian dual diagnosis program. Dual diagnosis is defined as those suffering from both substance dependence and mental illness. The interplay between addiction and mental illness is complex and best treated simultaneously for a full and lasting recovery.

The dual diagnosis program at our Christian drug and alcohol treatment center is well developed because people suffering from both addiction and mental illness is quite common. According to the American Medical Association as many as 37% of alcoholics and 53% of drug addicts also suffer from mental illness and, conversely, of those who are mentally ill, 29% abuse drugs or alcohol. Psychiatric conditions that are commonly presented among addicts and alcoholics include:

  • Depression and bi-polar disorder
  • Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and phobias
  • Other psychiatric disorders such as personality and eating disorders

Both the addiction and mental illness are treated together at our Christian drug and alcohol rehab. This is because of the complex relationship between the two. For example, the use of drugs and alcohol is often a subconscious attempt to self-medicate an underlying mental illness, which results in an addiction that, without exception, worsens the psychiatric state of the substance abuser. A person with depression may have increased suicidal tendencies while intoxicated or those with generalized anxiety disorder have augmented symptoms of this disorder while abusing drugs. In addition, sometimes the addictive use of substances can cause the onset of an otherwise dormant mental disorder such as panic disorder or paranoia.

The first order of treatment at our faith based treatment center includes detoxification from addictive substances because they worsen the underlying mental illness. After detoxification, the therapists at our Christian drug and alcohol rehab are able to assess the underlying mental illness not influenced or amplified by drugs and alcohol. Psychiatric treatments are only effective when people are first abstinent from drugs and alcohol. Our Christian dual diagnosis program is interdisciplinary by design, offering a comprehensive continuum of care that includes:

  • Medical Assessment
  • Individual Counseling
  • Group Therapy
  • Christian Counseling
  • 12 Step Program and Meetings
  • Celebrate Recovery Meetings
